March 2015 – May 2020
The NSW Government upgraded the roads around the new Northern Beaches Hospital improving capacity along Warringah Road. The hospital is located close to Warringah Road, Forest Way and Wakehurst Parkway, which are major arterial roads serving Sydney’s northern suburbs. Together these arterials currently carry about 140,000 vehicles per day.
Now complete, the upgrade provides a better travel experience with increased traffic capacity around the hospital precinct as well as on the major arterial roads in the area to cater for the anticipated population growth and traffic volumes following the opening of the hospital. This will result in more reliable journey times, improved flow for through traffic and safer access to cyclists and pedestrians.
Ferrovial York Joint Venture (FYJV) was engaged by Transport for NSW to deliver the project.
The Northern Beaches Hospital Connectivity and Network Enhancement (NHBCaNE) project was made up of two stages:
Stage 1 - Hospital Connectivity
Stage 1 was about providing key connectivity and traffic capacity around the new hospital by upgrading Frenchs Forest Road East, West and Naree Road from a single to dual carriageway, improving pedestrian access as well as bus stop upgrades servicing the hospital. Stage 1 was completed and opened to traffic in October 2018.
Stage 2 – Network Enhancement
The focus of stage 2 is on broader network enhancements. This includes the upgrade of Warringah Road to improve the performance of the road network to reduce congestion around the hospital, and the construction of a 1.3-kilometre-long underpass and three underpass bridges at the Forest Way, Hilmer Street and Wakehurst Parkway intersections. It also included key intersection improvements, bus stop upgrades, new shared paths, and new pedestrian bridges. This stage was completed and opened to traffic in May 2020.
The overall NBHCaNE project value is estimated at $2.8bn with the roadworks component being more than $500m.
